  1. Steve De Long says:

Thanks Peter for holding the torch! We made it over 200!

  2. Donald and Teresa Corbett says:

Our addition to the tasting is an organic dry white from Domaine de Pailentou. The main grape is the Sauvignon, with the addition of Mauzac. Quite an interesting combination. I don’t the the Mauzac on the list so we can add another to the birthday count. http://domainedepialentou.com/UK/cuvees_gentillespierres_pialentou.html
    Cheers all.

  3. I found a few possible duplicates while adding varieties from the 5th Anniversary list to my spreadsheet, also made some random notes on synonyms, spellings, and so on.

    DUPLICATE: Aglianico listed twice

    “Bonarda” without qualification is ambiguous:
Bonarda = Corbeau (Argentina, so likely Uruguay as well)
Bonarda = Croatina (in Oltrepò Pavese, Colli Piacentini, and Puglia)
    Bonarda Novarese = Uva Rara
    Bonarda Piemontese (“true” Bonarda)

Cesanese is ambiguous; could be Cesanese Comune, Cesanese di Affile, or a blend (in which case would count as two)

Charbono = Douce Noir (California); true Piemonte Charbono may not be commercially cultivated

    Chessalas (sp.) > Chasselas

    DUPLICATE: Fiano listed twice

    Gouveio = Godello (Duoro)

Izkiriota = Izkiriota Handi = Gros Manseng

DUPLICATE: Izkiriota Ttippia = Petit Manseng

DUPLICATE?: Malmsey = Malvasia; also a style of Madiera sometimes made from other grapes

DUPLICATE? Malvasia Bianca might be the same grape as the Malmsey

Muscat without qualifcation is ambiguous. Most often it’s Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains but it depends on the wine and region.

    Negroamoro (sp.) > Negroamaro

    Piedrosso (sp.) > Piedirosso

    Roupeiro = Síria

Roussette du Bugey = Roussette = Altesse

St. Lauren (sp.) > St. Laurent

Tinta Cão (sp.) > Tinto Cão

    Tocai Friulano = Friulano

Vernaccia: ambiguous without specifying origin; the term means “our grape” and is applied to various unrelated varieties including Vernaccia di Oristano, Vernaccia di San Gimigniano, Vernaccia di Serrapetrona, and Vernaccia Nera (Serrapetrona)

  4. Bruce Johnson says:

Shared a bottle of 50/50 from Chateau St. Croix which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from California and Frontenac from Wisconsin. A nice red, good body, mild tannins, and spicy fruit.

  5. Steve De Long says:

Thanks, Bruce and a big thank you to Robert for thankless task of proofreading – we lost five but are still over 200!

  6. Mary Williams says:

    Opened a bottle of Vranac

  7. Steve De Long says:

I have to come clean. Deborah and I had the 2005 Giribaldi Cento Uve – a blend of 152 grape varieties – which Tom Reagan (the sole Quattro member) generously brought to London. Tom and I thought that we should wait until the bulk of the count was done before adding it. It tops up our list with 107 additional varieties. I’ll write more about it tomorrow, but in the meantime you can read member Subhash Arora’s article on the wine: http://www.delhiwineclub.com/Wine_Feature/Piemonte.asp

  8. Last night with grilled steaks we opened a bottle Teroldego “Blood of the Dragon” from Chateau Thomas, the Indiana winery where I’m an assistant winemaker so I had the pleasure of fermenting, aging, and blending this wine. This is primarily ’08 fruit teroldego with 18% ’09. It’s a big wine, inky dark with quite a bit of fruit tones and a decent long finish. Fruit was from Lodi in CA and there is only about 15 acres planted in the state.

    Cheers!!

    Steve Somermeyer

  9. genevelyn says:

2007 Bosco Delle Cicale Langhe Freisa
similar to ruche, in my opinion, geranium and rose petal nose with a little bitter Campari like finish. Juicy and feminine.

  10. Henry Richardson says:

In honor of the Club’s birthday, I had:
Timorasso (grape: white) Colli Tortonesi (Piedmont) 2006 Derthona “Vigneti Massa”. Nose of spicy baked apple. Similar taste, with very long, honeyed finish. Med. Quite nice.
Txakoli (60% Hondarribi Zuri, 20% Mune Mahatsa, 20% Txori Mahatsa) 2009 Gurrutxaga. Odd nose of lychee, rubbing alcohol, warm beer. Taste like a light, citrusy beer–it had quite a bit of dissolved CO2. Light in color & body.
Timorasso and Hondarribi Zuri are already on the list, but I don’t see Mune Mahatsa or Txori Mahatsa.

  11. Marni Rubin says:

Last night, we toasted the Century Club at Savvy Cellar Wine Shop and Wine Bar in Redwood City, California. We tasted 3 different wines: a Bugianen Freisa d’Asti from Domenico Capello, a Castello di Verduno Pelaverga, and a Blaufrankisch, whose producer escapes me. I thought the Freisa might be tasted by someone else, but I was pretty sure the Pelaverga would not be on your list – amazingly, I guess someone tasted it last night. As of right now, a brief look through the list doesn’t reveal that anyone tried a Blaufrankisch, so maybe that’s our winning contribution!

  12. ted judd says:

Macabeo, Xarello, Perellada, Chardonnay, Mourvedre, Torrontés, Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec,
Petit Verdot, Cataratto, Carrucante, Moscatto, Toriga Nacional, Souzo, Tannat, Cabernet Franc

more later, as others in our group report in.

    ted

  13. Henry – great note – rubbing alcohol and warm beer! Not exactly an endorsement but 2 more grapes!

Marni – Thanks for the Blaufrankisch – it’s hard to add grapes at this stage!

    Ted – Thanks – amazingly 2 more!

  14. Add to our list – Bogedas Avanthia Godello 2008

  15. Michael DeMucci says:

I honor of the Clubs Birthday on May 8th, I toasted with an 2005 Endrizzi Teroldego Rotaliano Riserva and an 2003 Endrizzi Gropello di Revo. Both were CWC-worthy wines.

  16. Here are the grapes we tasted:

Narince, Kalecik Karasi, Zierfandler, Dolomiti, Osalecta, Muller-Thurgau, Riesling, Silvaner, Kerner, Plousard, Romorath, Faire Sevedou, Moscofilero, Assyrtiko, Aidani, Agiorgitiko, St Laurent, 3 different types of muscat, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Touriga, Pinot Noir and Viognier, and a port (we don’t know how many grapes!)

    That’s at least 30 for us! : )

  17. another one! we also had gamay (a beaujolais) at dinner!

  18. Michael – agreed, very WCC wines!

Constance – thanks for the list – the NYC crew has put us over double last year’s number!

  19. Mark Freeland says:

Steve, The tasting was successful beyond all expectations! The increase in the number of local WCC chapters indicates it is a growing phenomenon.

Is it possible to purchase the Giribaldi Centro Uve in the US? How much does it reatial for?

    Best,

    Mark and Diane Freeland

  20. Jeff Grossman says:

Wow! What a turnout! Sorry to be late to the party.

I attended a gigantic Edmunds St. John tasting, which was delightful though not too diverse in terms of grape varieties. He is most famous for his syrah-based wines but also makes excellent gamay, g/s/m blends, and a yummy vermentino-based blend.

The only grape we drank on Saturday that I don’t see here is grenache blanc, as grown in California. (Maybe it’s here under some other name?)

  21. Thanks, Mark and Diane! The only place in the world – at least according to wine-searcher.com – is in Spain: http://www.deblancoatinto.com/control/product/~product_id=10260

Alternatively, you can contact the winemaker, Giribaldi http://www.vinigiribaldi.it/contenuti.aspx?ID=1&lang=en

Hi Jeff, great to hear from you and very nice that you could add a grape at this late stage! Grenache blanc brings us to 314! Steve Edmunds just submitted an application perhaps due to you!

  22. Thanks for any other excellent article. The place else could anyone get that kind of information in such a perfect means of writing? I’ve a presentation subsequent week, and I’m on the search for such info.
