Casetta (known locally as Foja Tonda)
This is a variety indigenous to Vallagarina in Italy’s Adige Valley. It was close to extinction in the 1980s when winemaker Albino Armani rediscovered it — and successfully petitioned the government to reinstate it for cultivation in 2002. Lovely with red meat, mushrooms, and local cheeses such as Asiago.

Tasting Agricola Provenza’s GROPPELLO at a tasting at the Fireside Deli.
Groppello is a red grape native to the Garda Lake region. This one shows pleasant red fruit, herb and black fruit flavors. Fruity upfront, acidity kicking in in the finish. Medium body.

Enjoying a 2008 Xarmant Txakolina Xarmant Arabako Txakoli, a delightful Basque Country white blend of Hondarribi Zuri, Izkiriota, Izkiriota Ttippia, and Hondarribi Zuri Zerratia. All four of those are new for me (been saving this one for today!). Very Vinho Verde-esqe – refreshing, a little spritz, lime peel, oyster shell, saline, and a bit floral.

Happy fifth birthday! In about an hour Margaret and I will open a 2000 Moschioni Pignolo to have with her lasagna. That will be a new grape for us, giving us 141 grapes from Italian wines, and 233 grapes overall.

Just back from a trip to the outback and on the way home dropped in to Trentham estate and tried a Noble Taminga 2006.
Taminga is a white variety bred by CSIRO (Australian Science Institute) does well in warm climate and TE have made a lovely wine capturing the floral characters of the variety in a the botrytis sweetness. Six other wineries use this variety in Australia, as well as TE near Mildura.

just finished a wonderful wine made with the lacrosse grape. this is a variety has been created just for the upper midwest region of iowa, minnesota, and wisconsin. it is a nice light bodied , semi-sweet white with a hint of grapefruit.

Congratulations to our new multi-century members! IDEA: Why don’t we all put our lists online and thus share what grapes have gotten us over (and well over!) the Century mark? Particularly beyond the 250-grape level, it’s helpful to see what others are finding actually being produced so as to aid the hunt. Steve, can you establish a place on the site for “life lists,” hopefully ones that can include not only grape varieties but specific wines and wineries?

The Aiken, SC Wrath of Grapes chapter of the Wine Century Club had an impromptu meeting of four members. The evening started with Ironstone Vineyards SYMPHONY 2005 paired with pimento cheese spread. The next course was bacon-wrapped shrimp, accompained by Perrier Jouet NV Brut (assumed to be PINOT NOIR & CHARDONNAY with other grapes in too small a percentage to take credit for). The meal of pork loin medallions in mushroom sauce was paired with Picchetti TEROLDEGO 2007 and Linne Calodo “Cherry Red” 2007 (ZINFANDEL, MOURVEDRE, SYRAH). Dessert was fresh Aiken county strawberries, lightly marinated in Brachetto D’Acqui, accompanied by (of course) Pineto BRACHETTO D’ACQUI DOCG 2007. Dishwashing was made more pleasant with a half bottle of Quady Elysium 2007 (BLACK MUSCAT).

I opened a bottle of Uceline-the red Piemontese made from Uvalino grape. The owner of Cascina Castlet Winery told me she is the only one in the WORLD growing this varietal! Enjoyed delicious, minty and spicy, full bodied meditation wine with New Zealand steak n mushroom-stuffed chicken dinner at the magical Magique Restaurant in Delhi.

Three more:
Kalecik and Narince from Vikara Winery in Turkey
and Oseleta by Masi in Verona called Masi Osar
and is produced principally from the ancient Veronese variety Oseleta, rediscovered and replanted by Masi. This grape, with its extraordinary concentration, colour and tannin content, produces a wine of modern style, with a structure and complexity not usually to be found in the Verona area.

A great Greek Vinsanto of the grapes Asyrtiko and Aïdani. Made in the Santorianote ancient traditional fashion.
Not to be confused with the Italian Vin Santo or Vino Santo (holy wine) which is a style of Italian dessert wine. Traditional in Tuscany, often made from white grape varieties such as Trebbiano and Malvasia.

Prior to our event I had Von Strasser Gruner Veltliner from Napa, delicious. Also a Chardonel,(hybrid)from Ashevilla wines of North Carolina. The French Broad Chapter in Hendersonville enjoyed the following on The Anniversary.Trebbiano de Lugana, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Zin. I am surprised that Muller-Thurgau is not in the list.
We had it in a interesting german wine called P.J. Valckenberg Madonna Kabinett Founded in 1786, the House P.J. Valckenberg is Germany’s oldest and first brand name for wine. It was not bad.
That makes 191, plus there is one more that I can read my notes on, for 192. I think we are on our way to over 200, surely there are more to add to the list.

Happy 5th… here are some more varietals… not adding the ones already reported… Bukettraube (South Africa), Roscetto (Italy – even though the bottle turned out to be corked!), Tocai Friulano, Verdicchio, Traminette… but wait a minute… didn’t anyone have Lambrusco & Champagne( Pinot Meunier) to celebrate the Anniversary?
Seems like it turned out to be mainly Italian wine evening!
